What Makes Plainfield Unique?

Plainfield is a village that’s only forty minutes from Chicago. The village is in both Will and Kendal counties and is in a gorgeous area. Plainfield is far from a plain village as the name implies. There are plenty of things to do in Plainfield. Between the varied shopping centers, tasty eateries, and recreational activities there’s always something to do in Plainfield. There are multiple parks found in Plainfield, and you can find the Lake Renwick Preserve there. Plainfield has a storied history that they cherish. The village has established a community Preservation Commission and a historic preservation ordinance to maintain its link to the past.

History Of Plainfield

A French-Canadian fur trapper named Vetal Vermette briefly stopped in the area around 1823. He must have enjoyed what he experienced, as he came back a few years later to settle down there. Then, in 1826 a missionary, known as Jesse Walker, from West Virginia came to the area. His stay would be short-lived, but his son-in-law would stay and build a sawmill. It would be known as Walker’s Grove. Plainfield was an important location for the Black Hawk War of 1832.

Settlers of the Fox River Valley were fearful of aggression from the Native Americans. Many fled to Walker’s grove where they built up a fort. James Walker himself became a captain of the local militia in the fort. After the end of the war, the community grew up rather quickly. The village of Plainfield would become incorporated as early as 1861. The village was the first regiment of soldiers from Will County to the Union to help in the Civil War. Plainfield would continue to grow over time. However, after WWII the population grew massively and lead to Plainfield flourishing into the beautiful and diverse village it is today.
